The Sinners Pack
I suggest two films after watching Sinners for a triple feature
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has come a long way. In its first week, the film raked in $63 million dollars, which is a great opening for an R rated horror movie, only to be dismissed by one of Hollywood’s premiere voices. The movie’s budget was 90 million dollars and that loud voice from Tinseltown had the unmitigated gall to basically state, That’s okay, I guess, but it didn’t make all of its money back in week one.
I don’t know if that was anti-Black, dumb or both. I mean, I get that magazines have to rattle its readers cages to get people talking, but I’m going to need for them to think up a different strategy. Negativity isn’t the only way to get people engaged. Anyway, the critically acclaimed film is now sitting around 300 mil worldwide and critics and movie goers consider it to be one of the best films of 2025. Now let’s get to why we’re here. For those who saw Ryan Coogler’s magnum opus, rather if you loved it or hated it, I have two other films that you might want to consider for a triple feature.
The first film is Crossroads. A movie that came out in 1986, starring Ralph Macchio in a much lesser known role than the Iconic Daniel-san in The Karate Kid that’s still kicking around in 2025. He played alongside Joe Seneca, whose character was a blues singer named Willie Brown. All I will say is that it’s a movie about a blues singer who sold his sold to Legba and in his late age, Willie wants his soul back. Ralph Macchio’s character, Eugene, a blues loving guitarist, who believes that Robert Johnson actually wrote 30 songs and not 29 and he wants Brown to teach him the long-lost song since he was a friend and bandmate of Johnson’s. I haven’t seen the film since I was a kid, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it after coming out of the theatre. I went home and found it on Tubi and I must say, it’s better than I remembered. So if you’re still in the blues and supernatural mood after watching Sinners, then you should probably check this one out.
The next movie that came to mind after watching Sinners was A Devil In A Blue Dress starring Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle and Jennifer Beals. This film came to mind because many people seemed confused about the character Mary, and her situation. Like Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Beals also has a real life connection to her character. I don’t want to give too much away just in case you want to watch it, but here’s the synopsis. Denzel’s character, Easy Rawlins, is hired to find a white woman, and gets caught up in a murder and mayhem. This is one of my favorite movies and it’s a gumbo of greatness. From the brilliant writer Walter Mosley, the director Carl Franklin, and the superb cast.
There you go with what I’m calling The Sinners Pack. At first, of course, go see the movie Sinners if you haven’t already. After that, find the other two gems in Crossroads and A Devil In a Blue Dress and have yourself a triple feature.
